Free culture! Come and get your free culture!
Smithsonian magazine is hosting Museum Day Live! It’s an annual event to honor the spirit of the Smithsonian Museums who offer free admission every day. Museums throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and even one in Panama are in on the deal.
Some participating museums are A-listers with connections to the Smithsonian with others showcasing quirky, focused collections. In New York City, the Skyscraper Museum celebrates all things tall. In Colorado it’s all things small at the Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys. From aerospace in California to a zoo in South Florida and everything in between, there is something for everyone.
Participating museums will allow you waltz (or walk) through their doors for free on Saturday, September 28, 2013 but you have to have a ticket to play. Easy enough to get. Just go here and fill in some information. They will email a ticket for you to print. (Yes, data mining is alive and well for anything that is “free” these days!)
Each ticket is good for two people but there is a limit of one ticket per household. You’ll still have to pay for parking and special events and exhibits. You’ll see all of the rules on the page where you enter your info.
Expand your horizons this Saturday. With over 1,500 venues on the list to choose from, it should be easy to find a free museum nearby. A little culture never hurt anyone and all you have to invest is a little time.
Hi Jill,
Thanks for posting about the free museum days. Hopefully more people will visit if they know it’s free. It looks like we have lots in common besides our names! I also posted about it. 🙂
There are tons of museums around the country that are in on this deal, not just Smithsonian museums. The Smithsonian is fantastic, I spent days there with my grandmother when I was a kid. I’m sure I could do it again if I ever got back to DC.
Hi Jill,
I would love to spend a week wandering through all of the free museums in DC but I really like to search for the quirky and weird ones and there were quite a few on the list for last year’s Museum Day Live. I hope they do it again this year!
